What should I wear?

We've been a bit surprised at how often we've been asked this question, particularly given that neither of us are known for our stylish (or even adult) dress sense. Below, we try to give you an idea of what you might find most comfortable and appropriate for the various events of the weekend.

Adorn your head with things from the garden

Friday Evening: Fun, Games and Posh Buffet

Guests are invited to start arriving at the wedding hotel on Friday after lunch. This is intended to be a casual affair, so save your pretty clothes for Saturday. The bar will be open, and you can enjoy a stroll in the gardens or a game of croquet. We've hired a sailboat for the day for brief excursions from the hotel jetty -- be sure to bring some warm clothes if you wish to go! There will be a buffet dinner Friday evening for all, including those staying elsewhere, followed by evening entertainment. Late-night swimmers are advised to bring a parka and perhaps a ladder.

Saturday Morning: Boat Cruise

In the morning we will have a boat cruise around Lake Windermere, departing from the hotel's jetty. A sweater or jacket is recommended, as it can be chilly on the lake. It is also likely to be windy, so lads and ladettes with delicate hair architecture may want to postpone coiffuring until after the cruise.

Saturday Afternoon: The Wedding

The wedding itself should not involve many fashion surprises. Most guests will probably be comfortable in a summer dress or a suit. Weather permitting, part of the day will be spent on the terrace outside. Our best advice is to find whatever you wore to the last wedding you attended, and wear something similar. Unless perhaps it was your wedding, or the one pictured to the right.

Barring record rainfall, scuba attire should not be necessary

Saturday Night: Silliness

It is our experience that late nights with certain friends of ours tend to involve headgear beyond the standard wedding fare. It is also our experience that, at some point, everyone succombs to their inner diva.

After the Wedding: Lake District Walking

Weather in the Lake District is notoriously unreliable. Temperatures are likely to range from 15-25C (60-80F), and you should expect it to rain at some point during your visit. If you are planning to do some walking, particularly any fell walking, we strongly recommend packing plenty of layers. Generally, you'll be fine if you walk with a sweater and a rainproof jacket. Warm-blooded gents will probably be comfortable in shorts, although you're likely to be just as comfortable in light walking trousers. Note that most of the fell paths are rough, so proper footwear is a must if you are planning to venture off the more straightforward trails. Strong sunscreen and sunglasses are also recommended.
