I have ACPI compiled into the kernel, and USB working for my mouse
(which
can be used at the same time as the touchpad). The instructions on how
to
do this are on Ted Serreyn's excellent web page. However,
with
the ACPI enabled kernel I cannot get the machine to power off when I do
a
shutdown, this works fine when I use RedHat's own kernel.

Got fed up with having to compile my own kernels, and installed SuSE
8.1
with a lot of help (Cheers Torsten) - which works with Sony laptops
straight
out of the box (with a few simple instructions). The guys at SuSE have
spent
a lot of time and effort getting ACPI support right, and it shows.
Everything
is supported, memstick, firewire, etc etc, and the machine now shuts
down
and powers off when I want it to! The ACPI support is there if you want
to
start playing around with suspend, CPU throttling etc. Because I am now
using
KDE 3, which is *really* nice, I have installed aKpi - a KDE util for
checking
on battery levels.
Having gone through all the hassle trying to get RedHat to work nicely,
I
have to say that the SuSE 8.1 distro is what I would recommend for
anyone
trying to put Linux on a SONY Vaio (GRX, or whatever). I will be
writing
a simple set of instructions for how to install SuSE over the next
couple
of weeks. Check back periodically.

Got fed up with SuSE 8.1 and installed 8.2 instead ;) Works a treat.
ACPI support straight out of the box. Definitely the Linux version for
this machine.....until they release version 9 that is (on 24/10/03).
